Big Brothers Big Sisters
The grant from Blue Mountain Village Foundation will fund their Group Mentoring Programs which include “Kids in Action”, “Game On” and “Georgian Blue Gardens After School Program”.
Kids in Action (coed), and Game On (boys) are staff led, volunteer assisted, group mentoring programs provided in a safe environment, aimed at educating girls and boys, helping to set them on a path to reach their full potential in health, in school and in life. The program consists of 3 mentoring sessions, held over a 12 week period, after school within school facilities or, in a community facility. Each session is structured around active living, balanced eating and feeling good about oneself. A healthy snack and a physical activity is part of each session. Team building and cooperative activities are also regular features. The youth are encouraged to participate, discuss and interact. These lively sessions provide youth with information and support to make informed choices.
Weekly After School Program at Georgian Blue Gardens started November 6, 2013. This program targets the residents of this social housing complex, many of whom are registered BBBS participants. The focus of this program is for kids to have a safe and fun place they can visit right where they live, where there are friendly and supportive BBBS volunteers and staff that they can talk to. Healthy snacks are provided. Activities include art programming, homework help, indoor games and outdoor play.
